Bathtime is the perfect opportunity for you to relax and bond with your baby.
1. Bathtime should be planned in between feeds so that your baby is wide awake and happy, rather than irritable. Preparation is essential – the bathroom needs to be warm and cosy, while a towel, sponge and toiletries should all be within easy reach. It can also be reassuring for someone to be with you during the first few bathtimes, while you adjust to your new routine.
2. Fill the bath to around 13cm (5in) deep, with the water at around 37˚C. Use your elbow or wrist, which are more sensitive to heat, to test. The water should be comfortably warm, not hot. For additional safey, use a thermometer.
3. Lower your baby slowly into the water and, while supporting his head, neck and body with one arm, wash him gently with a sponge using your free hand. Keep a good grip, as babies can be slippery when wet. A bath support can also be useful, as it will leave you hands-free.
4. Never leave your baby in the bath unattended, not even for a few seconds. If the telephone or doorbell rings, don’t answer or take your baby with you.
5. Always wash your baby from top to bottom and from front to back to avoid spreading infections. His face and genitalia should be cleaned thoroughly.
6. Bathtime should be a fun experience for your baby so encourage lots of splashing and use bath toys to entertain.
7. Gently lift him out of the water and wrap him up in a big, soft towel. When patting him dry, pay particular attention to his bottom, the back of his neck and his fingers and toes, which are prone to getting chapped.
8. Put a new nappy on your baby, dress him in clean clothes and wrap him in a warm blanket. Now it’s cuddle time!
9. Two baths a week will be sufficient as any more may dry his skin. In between, wash your baby’s face regularly, clean his genitals and bottom after each nappy change and wipe any dirt off his skin.
10. Skin-to-skin contact with your baby is an essential part of the bonding process, so having a bath together can be hugely rewarding. It’s a great way for your partner to bond with your baby too.
